The written-by-a-human bit

The monster report that got everyone chatting this week was The Reuters Institute Generative AI and news report 2025: How people think about AI’s role in journalism and society. YouGov surveyed over 2,000 respondents in each of six countries in June and July this year: Argentina, Denmark, France, Japan, the UK, and the US.

The charts that stood out to me should be broadly welcome news for publishers and media organisations.

While the overall proportion of respondents who have ever used Generative AI products has shot up (40% to 62% 2024/2025), the number using it (principally ChatGPT) for news remains relatively low, but growing, 3% to 6%

This chart is the one to watch for product managers considering tools to offer subscribers: follow-up questions, summaries, evaluating sources, and simplification are all lead use cases for early adopters.

Finally, this chart should warm the hearts of the humanists—only 12% are comfortable with news generated entirely by AI. Humans, with some help, is the way to go. (Worth noting that 62% comfort for entirely human journalists feels a bit low/rude).

Which brings me on to some slides of my own. We at Mathison have been doing several workshops and keynotes for senior editors around the world. Counter-intuitively, for an AI advisory business, our key message is to lean into what makes us human.

We champion the idea that empathy with your colleagues and audience is the edge we have over AI, and that critical thinking is crucial for staying smart around AI tools. You will also have to learn how to manage teams of AI agents, and without becoming too anthropomorphic, you will need to be fair yet ruthless to keep them on track.

5 out of 5 stars
Simple and yet complex, it addresses the AI conundrum perfectly. A surprisingly brilliant read, one that will require several readings (this is a good thing). The idea of using AI to talk about itself is also very clever. Thoroughly recommended.

Hi

AI will be a substantial competitive advantage for those who master it. But most are still struggling with adoption because rolling out a chatbot or copilot isn’t enough to get people using it.

At Mathison AI, we are helping CEOs like you rapidly discover and prototype high-impact AI use cases tailored to your business.

We’re currently working with global and local enterprises to identify areas where AI can drive real operational value — from automation and cost savings to entirely new product ideas.

If you’re exploring AI and want a clear, low-risk way to get started, I’d love to share how we approach it through fast education sessions and hands-on prototyping.
